play it loud

As I watched The Advantage run through endless covers of music from the 8-bit era, I realized that something was...off. Not the band--their skills and slavish devotion rendered every theme song they touched equal parts faithful, epic, and rockin'. Not the Railway, either--even though it was packed and probably not the best place for this show. Hell, it wasn't even the hipsters--they were themselves, albeit with Nintendo/gaming-themed tees and accessories. No, this something was missing.

About halfway through, I figured out what this night was lacking: games. It's one thing to say that oh yeah, Mega Man 2 rocked--it's another to dust off an old NES, hook the thing up, blow into your cartridges, and play. What's the point of geeking out on nostalgia if the ultimate trip down memory lane--playing the damn game--isn't readily available?

I left the Railway with my thumbs itching for something to play. I'm sure I wasn't the only one. (Luckily, my DS goes with me everywhere--I was playing it at the bar!--so my urges were quickly satisfied with a round of Dr. Mario.)

music, video games, nostalgia
