Even though I'm in the right part of the world for them, I've never seen dolphins up close. I should fix that; I've always been quite jealous of Vicky Austin and her experiences with them in "A Ring of Endless Light"...! :)
They really feel unlike anything else, which is why they're so difficult to describe. You think of an adjective and then it doesn't quite fit - they're not quite "plasticky," and not like "pewter" (resilient or otherwise). They're a little like a beach ball full of wet cement, but not exactly. Really, they're just plain indescribable.
Yeah, it was pretty amazing. I forgot to explain the captain's comment though - we'd been on a dolphin-watch cruise the day before and (because of horrible freak weather) hadn't seen any dolphins. We'd been chatting with the (sweet) captain earlier, and explaining about that. So when we saw the dolphins he laughed and called down to us - "You ordered dolphins, Ceendies?" (We got called "Cindies" a lot, heh. Or "Cindy and Cindy." It was pretty funny.)

I don't think dolphins feel like "resilient pewter," though.
