Sleep Study Results

Apr 07, 2005 13:43

Our progress at rehearsal last night was, again, great. I'm so excited about this show. Yes, I know I said I hated it a week ago, but let's pretend I didn't.

At lunch today I went to see the sleep doc and get my ( test results. )

apnea, sick

What did he tell you?

He said even at my age he thought it'd be better to get the tonsils out rather than deal with a CPAP.

Hi
Not to frighten you...but...Sleep Apnea, untreated.over time... leads to heart failure and stroke..Since you are young...you don't have to fear this...now...but I wouldn't let it go untreated. Each time there is a breathing disturbance...the brain instructs the body to produce a dose of adrenaline...which shocks the heart, raises blood pressure and wakes you up.....Do this 32 times each night for 10-15 years and it wears out the heart.....I have Sleep Apna..weight loss can help, tonsils may not, the CPAP machine is very effective ....unfortunately its difficult to get used to...good luck

My dad has had a CPAP for 17 years now, and my mom credits herself with saving his life by making him get the test done... hehe... so I am SO intimately familiar with the spiel :)

I've been resisting getting the tonsillectomy because I know it sucks. But the doc seems to think that it most likely would help in my case.

If it doesn't, I will of course explore the CPAP option.

Thanks for the input :)

I had my tonsils out when I was 19. It was not as bad as I thought it would be. They give you pain medications that pretty much make you have no pain and it isn't to bad to just have a liquid/jello/soup diet for a few days until it has healed. I was back to eating regular diet in just 4 days.

Mmmm... a liquid diet is enough to convince me ;)

You got me beat. I had about 20 disturbances per hour. That also makes a moderate case of apnea. My doc told me, however, that surgery is an option that works best for mild cases of apnea. He said that if I use the CPAP and lose some weight that I might be good for surgery to get rid of it altogether, but only when I drop down to a mild case. And yeah, he also told me that the dental appliance thing doesn't do much. Are you going to get a CPAP? I get mine next Thursday, and I'm (strangely/sadly) looking forward to it. I just want a good night's sleep!!!

I'm going to try the tonsillectomy first, actually. I don't feel like I *do* have a bad night of sleep, actually. Very rarely.

You don't feel like you have bad nights of sleep?!? No fair! Consider yourself lucky, I guess! I always feel exhausted, no matter how much or how little sleep I get. Well more power to ya. :P

Yeah... that's why I was never really suspicious that I might have a problem. I never doze off randomly, it's only once in a blue moon that I take a nap, and I'm generally pretty pleasant. Depending on who you ask... hahaha.

I'm glad you got the sleep test done. Whatever happens at least you know what you are dealing with, eh? It'll be interesting to see if you do the tonsils. Ouch.
