We headed to Austin on Saturday afternoon, arriving in time for dinner with my family Saturday night. After getting Corwin to bed, Andrew and I ran off to the Gregorys' house for some socialization and game playing. We got home around 11:30 to find Corwin awake and drinking a bottle in my mom's lap. We all got to bed by shortly after midnight, ( Read more... )

Ick. I'm sorry to hear you both are sick. Can you take an expectorant like guaifenesin? I've been taking that during my cold (since I can't have pseudoephedrine because of another medication I'm taking) and it does seem to be helping.

I haven't researched guaifenesin with regards to whether it's safe when breastfeeding because I always thought of it as intended to loosen chest congestion and make it easier to cough up. Currently, I'm just congested in my head -- will it help with that also?

I think it loosens mucus wherever it happens to be, actually. At least, it seemed to help me, but that might just be placebo effect. :-)

I'm almost 100% positive it's ok while breastfeeding. It should help you "drain" (chest or nasal). I also had my doctor recommend using Afrin spray while breastfeeding since it's a decongestant but has a much more localized effect directly on the nasal/sinus tissues and doesn't affect the milk supply. That being said, use it as sparingly as possible since it's easy to get a "bounce-back" effect from it where you get worse if you try to stop using it after using it too much. It would help clear me out enough that I could sleep, which is what I always have problems with.
And you can do sudafed while breastfeeding, just be very careful. It will not harm Corwin, but he might get fussy/thirsty. Just anticipate more often nursing sessions.
We missed you :(
