Out of Habit
SHINee band!fic (Jonghyun/Onew interaction), Jessica/Jonghyun, slight Onew/Taeyeon)
G; Band!fic, bonding, romance, slight angst.
They're creatures of habit, so nothing good happens when there is something unusual.

It's not so much that Jinki tries to be a Good Leader, but more that Jonghyun is painfully obvious when he's in love.

Jonghyun falls in love much like he does everything else: with all his heart, impulsively, obsessively. Falls headfirst and doesn't mind the crash, gets up quickly just so he can fall again, wears his battle scars with pride. He's never been one to think twice, and is entirely willing to be swept up, over by the wave. The popular one in the hallway, the ones girls love and the boys want to be (but like all the same), that's him. Love with him is sneaking out at night, making out in the boys washroom and sneaking into underage concerts. He'll keep his arms around you through it all, anything to show that you're his girl. Don't you remember? He's the one that got you the guitar, his band's latest EP, that designer bag which was all the rage at the time.

But see, the thing with Jonghyun and love is that he falls in and out so quickly. Sometimes it's a day, or a week or even a month or two, but the only love that's ever lasted is singing and everyone around him takes comfort in the fact that this love won't go away (because Jonghyun is flighty, impermanent, always wants new and more).

Jinki knows.

He knows that the two of them are complete and total polar opposites and because of that, Jinki knows him best. And Jinki prefers to wait, watch and see; evaluates all the options and possibilities before acting (when he does make a move, that is). He is chaste kisses on the cheek and study dates in the library, holding hands comfortably while walking along the sidewalk to school. Love for him is falling slowly, and when it ends it ends slowly, long and painful while he attempts to extricate his heart.

So he tries not to fall in love, and it works most of the time because he's frustratingly analytical like that (like his first and last ex-girlfriend said). After all, he has to be a Good Leader and Good Leaders put the band before themselves. And that's how he notices Jonghyun's sudden exuberance, the early morning workouts and the trashcan that automatically refills with crossed out scribbles every night. His suspicions are confirmed when Jonghyun presents the lyrics to Juliette (I'll offer you my soul), mouth laughing wide open but his eyes are tight and anxious, almost asking for criticism. Instead, he gives him a quick hug from behind and high fives with all the other members when the lyrics are accepted.

It's never quite out of his mind; it can't be when Jonghyun's a firework ready to be sparked by anything these days. But he's learned to leave these things alone and he does so, until one night when they arrive home at 4 (morning schedules at 8) and he's about to stumble into bed when he notices there's light shining from behind the workroom door. Jonghyun's head is propped on his arm, which is propped on the desk; he's scribbling music and lyrics and crossing out almost as much. When he turns (Oh, hyung!) there's dark circles under his eyes, not much but they're there and he wonders how much sleep the boy's been getting lately.

Jonghyun's eyes are following him again, nervous and expectant and this time the corners of his lips are only turned up weakly. Jinki know's he's expecting and that he himself should probably give some type of scolding right about now, but there's ink smudged on Jonghyun's fingers and cheeks and he doesn't have the heart to crush his heart. He opens his mouth and Jonghyun's shoulders tense (and Taeyeon never said being a leader was this hard) and sits down beside him before speaking. "Who is it this time?"

Now Jonghyun is supposed to go off on a tangent, tell him about the girl and the way she talks, walks, laughs, cries. But he's silent, smoothing out the crumpled sheet of paper. Opens his mouth, closes it. Swallows.

Oh shit, Jinki thinks absently. Jonghyun's not talking, The world just turned upside down.

He's watching Jonghyun and Jessica dance around each other, completely different than the provocative routine they did on stage. This one is polite, wary, always swerving at the last minute to avoid each other when talking and bowing. Be careful with your heart, he wants to say. People don't fall in love in this business. Now Taeyeon is next to him, eyes focussed on the couple across the room.

"People don't fall in love in this business," (You pick up your pieces and I'll pick up mine; keep it a secret, shhh, I like you, I like you)

"No, they don't,"
