And we wonder why obesity is on the rise...

Apparently the calories we drink have increased significantly over the past 37 years.  Pop, juice, alcohol, we just all love our sugary beverages apparently.  They note in the article that calories from whole milk are down over the same time period.  I saw we rather liberally here, the study is American, but I imagine done here, we would see ( Read more... )

I wonder if people tend to discount drinks as a whole when looking at their caloric intakes. Sort of an its only a drink so it doesn't count sort of thing? Or if they're tricked by the idea that if somethings juice based then it must be healthy, so they just drink away without looking at a label. Like giving kids Sunny Delight and thinking that you're giving them something grand because its an 'orange' drink.

I know I had to inform my sister that SunnyD was just a soft drink without the carbonation.

This was an interesting article... I had heard something very similar a few years back. It was an article on toddlers and how they were overweight and had more cavities, not solely because of inactivity and junk food; but because more parents were putting juices into bottles thinking that it was healthy. They never considered the sugar content. The article said to, by and large, only give water in bottles; particularly if the toddler is taking the bottle to bed with them.

I agree, liquids go down easily and you can forget the 100, 150, 300 calories attached to that beverage. Juice is a great example. A can of pop and a little glass jar of juice have pretty close to the same number of calories. I'm not saying the pop is better, but it's not like juice or "drinks" are without calories.

And Sunny D just kills me. They don't list the ingredients on their web site, but I could have sworn it was an "edible oil product". It's not going to ever be on my shopping list. Concerned about vitamin C? Have an orange. Or a pepper. Or a ...

Sunny D reminds me of Tang. And I've been raised to hate Tang.

Fresh out of dental school, my dad took a job working as an on-site dentist at a school in a very small northern Ontario (way north) mining community (apparently the government used to sponsor such things, back when Canada still believed in socialism). Everyone fed their kids Tang... because it was WAY cheaper than Orange Juice and the bastards who marketed Tang had convinced these people that it was "super healthy" for their children. As one might expect, the kids had mouths full of cavities and decay.

As for myself, I pretty much drink only water and coffee these days. Most "juice" is disgustingly sweet and I've really lost my taste for soda too.
