Strange things that make me happy

The Fall semester starts in 29 days. While I have enjoyed my summer off, I kind of wish I had taken summer courses. I find myself rattling around with downtime, but quickly fill it. SCSU does their summers in two mini-semesters instead of one full semester, which would have meant I would have had to cram twelve week courses into six weeks. The idea ( Read more... )

There is a course of cataloging?
I spent many years catalogging books and never had such a course. There again I sat with the volumes of Sears Cataloging Books on the shelf above my desk where I rarely referenced it. 80-90% of the titles fell in categories that I memories the dewy decimal numbers on.

Absolutely. There's proper authority control to learn (professional language), plus LoC cataloging as well as Dewey Decimal, ALA filing rules, how to read MARC cataloging (most cataloging is done by machine nowandays, but you still have to be able to understand it)and a bunch of other stuff.

I know, sounds thrilling, huh.

Ah.. I learned the Dewey Decimal cataloging using the Sears categories while sitting in front of the desk doing it. And manually typing up the MARC records. I had to keep all the various codes in my head. (Although anything cataloged by the library of congress was usually easily searchable and only required small modifications to their MARC records.)

I don't even remember how I learned it other than having those reference manuals and the books in front of me. I think I did it for something like 12 years without any real training.

I love shelving books, too. Sometimes I'll spend hours rearranging my bookshelf, all because I can. It's fun!

Last school year, every time I was in one certain library, someone (I think one of the volunteers) had rearranged the dog section 636 so that all the books of a 'set' were together. Dogs are arranged the way they are shown in a dog show - by class (working, toy, hounds) and then by breed. I spent 20 minutes once a week for three weeks running putting them all back in order!

I love order. Shelving IS fun.
