It looks a lot like Orthodox theology. Russian monks gained much respect by wearing chains or wandering barefoot in the streets (yes, in winter-time as well).

Surprised to learn that Protestants value humility too. I used to think, they consider money as God's blessing. Maybe I was wrong.

I don't really know about Protestants in general, although I imagine that humility is important to them because there is a lot in the Bible about it. But this particular author at least believes that humility is important. He focuses more on spiritual than physical discipline, though.
