Day 12. Least favorite Austen heroine.

Poor Fanny Price! Nobody likes her, and I have to admit that I don't either. She has many good qualities, but the truth is, she doesn't really have a sense of humor, and she's just not very much fun. I hate throwing her under the bus, though, because I do admire her. She is the only character in Mansfield Park ( Read more... )

Shame on me, I've never completed Mansfield Park but by the little that I know of Fannie Price I understand why you "threw her under the bus". I think because she never strays from her morals she's not as strong a character as let's say, Elizabeth Bennet, but we can't win them all.

Part of my problem with her is that she's such a shrinking violet -- she never stands up for herself! Wait, that's not true; she totally stands up for herself by refusing to marry Henry Crawford. But it's easy to forget that, because she's so meek and unassuming all the time, completely willing to be treated as a doormat. Lizzy Bennet would never allow herself to be bullied the way that Fanny does!

I do! She's not my favourite heroine, but she's not my least favourite either. I think that would be the heroine of either "Persuasion" or "Northanger Abbey" - as proven by the fact that I can't even remember their names ;) Those two are my least favourite novels as well, so I think that probably has something to do with it.

I'm glad someone likes Fanny! I have definitely noticed a correlation between the "least favorite book" and "least favorite heroine" answers. They definitely seem to go hand in hand!

I heard wonderful things about The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms; let me know what you think of it when you read it! I'd love to read it but given the number of other fantasy series I'm going through at the moment, I can't read it right now, lol.

I really need to re-read Mansfield Park sometime. I do admire Fanny as well for not backing down on her principles.

I probably won't get to The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms until, like, January. :) But I'll certainly post a review when I do!

I really want to like Fanny, but I just don't! I think that's why most film adaptations of Mansfield Park are so unfaithful to the book: they all try to make Fanny Price more likable -- in fact, more like Elizabeth Bennet!
