Stupid question... what's steampunk? That's a new genre to me.

Not a stupid question! Steampunk is a genre that combines a historical time period (the Victorian era is one of the most popular) with futuristic technology (dirigibles, automatons, etc.). Thus, it combines the fun of historical fiction with the fun of crazy sci-fi gadgetry! Here's the Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steampunk.

Ah! Thank you :) Not so strange that I hadn't heard of it then, I actually don't think I've ever read any books in that genre. I'll be looking forward to seeing if the books on your list are any good... although I have heard much good about the one by Scott Westerfeld.
