If it's not something, then it's something else

It's been a few dasy since my last post, and a great deal has happened since then. Today I returned to work after a three day hiatus, and found out that my students did basically nothing in my absence. That is very frustrating, to say the least. Yeah, I was rather offended, too, but I also stood. BUT . . . the way I reasoned it, is if we had had dignitaries, say, from Nigeria and they had played the Nigerian National Anthem, I would have stood for that out of respect. Zora didn't stand, but I didn't tell him to stand, either.

Of course, I was also rather offended that the deaf students would come to our school and sign/sing "I Can See Clearly Now." Were they purposely making fun of us? --grin--

Sure...if we had representatives from another sovereign nation (even the fucking French), I would not have had a problem with that...the problem was that we were expected to stand in reverence to a group of American citizens that has chosen to give themselves their own national anthem....and they chose to do so on the grounds of a government institution.

I would recommend calling it "The song for unity", or "The song to celebrate our equality", or something of that nature. But the words "national anthem" are totally inappropriate.

As for the deaf students and "I can see clearly now"....we should get our choir to perform "Do you hear what I hear" on their campus at Christmastime *g*
