I'm not a member of biblical_faith so can't comment there, but a significant subject was raised there today, so I thought I'd post my thoughts here instead ( Read more... )

There was no resurrection before Christ, he is the "first-born of creation" the first raised from the dead. The reference to Jonah is simply applying an allegorical interpretation to the event of Jonah (not dismissing its literal interpretation), and showing how it foreshadows Christ.

Resuscitation is not the same thing as resurrection. Lazarus was not resurrected, either, merely resuscitated.

But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you. -Romans 8:11

We go down into the grave, beyond the land of the living.

We rise up again, we rise in the land of the living.

For life in Christ is life indeed.

And Jesus references Jonah because of the clear sign and symbolism of Jonah going down to the depths, beyond the land of the living, and yet rising again, and seeing the land of the living.

Romans 8 is so awesome.

I think in particular the person of the Holy Spirit is important to bear in mind if and when we choose to discuss the new life in Christ.

Definitely - though the Holy Spirit always seems so self-effacing. What I mean is, I often feel prompted to worship the other two members ofthe Trinity and to at least in some ways envisage them.

But it's quite hard to envisage the Holy Spirit, except through what the Spirit does. Almost like the shy member of the Trinity.

Yet as the psalmist wrote, even such a long time ago, "You send your Spirit: we are created, and You renew the face of the earth."

New life in Christ is realised when we are born again of the Spirit.
