I can't bung a comment on your Author blog so I'll put one here. Re establishing when the prequel takes place, apart from saying it in the blurb, you could make reference within the story to a historical event mentioned or implied in the original novels ie you could have the coronation of the first King of the royal dynasty or a character could say "Hey, I got this grouse idea for a Magician Guild Hall complex".

Both your suggestions fit into the 'detail that most readers won't remember" categories, I'm afraid. It needs a "slap the reader in the face with it" sort of solution, which the blurb provides.
