I see Final Fantasy VIII...A democracy of sorts in a nation that understands conflict is necessary (the game is based around a global mercenary force, after all...), a "standard" level-up system that still has room for customization, an ultimate boss that more or less just gives you the satisfaction of having beaten it, ancient artifacts as secrets (Solomon Ring anyone?), and a back-to-normal ending that shows you what happened to the characters... :) Plus I suppose VIII has relatively "normal" weapons all things considered...not that a gunblade and projectile-pinwheels are normal, but they do at least make sense for the storyline...<3
I honestly see you fitting in more of the Final Fantasy Tactics world (although it doesn't really have that many technologies in it, it IS a more medieval setting O_O;). It's definitely got an antagonist in Delita that isn't one-dimensional (and your definition of an antagonist in your world fits him PERFECTLY), it has a great soundtrack, it doesn't have an overly cheery ending by any means either. I kind of had a hard time narrowing your application down to one of the main FF game installments...but since FF Tactics has such a different take on the usual FF story, it seemed like a really good fit overall to me. :)
So I haven't played FFVIII (is it even out yet? I WANT. :p), but what I've read of conflicts in the world, and the way gameplay works out seems to fit your app well. :)
I'm going with Final Fantasy X-2. The secrets, especially talking about the appearance changes, reminded me of it. The ending part especially when referring to multiple endings with a "world is doomed" ending hehe also reminded me of it. Also, the different cultures and different music.
