1. In a large bowl, cream together the butter, shortening, and vanilla. Blend in the sugar, one cup at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in the milk, and continue mixing until light and fluffy. Keep icing covered until ready to decorate.
if you dont have shortening you can double the butter. any flavoring will work if you dont' have vanilla. lemon might be nice since you already have lemon in the cake.
Ooooh you rock!! although wait - i've only got about 1.5 cups confectioners' sugar ... if no other suggestions, i will try grinding some regular sugar in a blender and trying it out - or do you think regular sugar could work?
You can also try a ganache. I don't have proportions, but basically melt the chocolate chips, add a bit of butter and maybe the condensed milk? And add a bit of liqueur.
mmmm, the more I think of this, the more i think it would have also been a fantastic idea ... limoncello chocolate ganache. I'm so making this sometime.
The ganaches I've made have always had a cream base ... mmm ganache... Sorry, got distracted. Anyway, I've never tried subbing anything for the cream - that sounds like another fun experiment! thanks :) :)
