WARNING: ANGRY RANT ABOUT ABORTION RIGHTS, ETC., AHEAD.

So UW-Health wants to open a second-trimester abortion clinic, as the clinic in town has stopped offering them due to their qualified clinician retiring. Unsurprisingly, there has been major, major backlash against their decision and wants ( Read more... )

Yeah, just--I want to smack people who say "well, if everyone got birth control and sex ed that was worth a shit and there were better programs for free or cheap child care so the single moms can work and go to school and you still think women should be able to have abortions, you're stupid"

--because yeah, in these peoples' perfect little dream world women are never raped, girls old enough for their babymaking parts to be online are never molested, birth control is 100% effective, and a baby daddy, who might have been the primary breadwinner in the relationship, will never ditch his lady when he suddenly realizes a month into the pregnancy that OH CRAP HE DOESN'T WANT TO HELP RAISE BABBY HE HELPED FORM. Among other things.

Yeah, it would be great if abortion was never necessary. Unfortunately, as you said, that will never, ever happen. So instead of throwing out hypothetical and completely impossible hypothetical situations and going "well would you still be pro-choice then?" maybe pro-lifers could expend those valuable brain ( ... )

I'm glad you agree. The gay rights thing gets me especially, and that Carlin quote is spot-on!

Exactly. If you're against abortion, fine, awesome--then help us fight the causes. The root issue isn't sex: the root issue is whatever leaves that child unwanted.

The problem isn't sex or women or anything: the problem is rape, is condom breakage, is society, is no safe sex, is a situation where the resources aren't available or possibele.

BEAUTIFUL. This is everything I believe and you said it perfectly.

I become furious when someone tries to preach about the "rights of the unborn" over the rights of, say homosexuals - or even the pregnant woman herself.

My phobia and physical health make it a very nightmarish mess if I were to get pregnant, especially unexpectedly. I do not need to be told that I'd be committing murder. Like you, I have no idea when life begins, but I do believe that the fetus becomes a fully realized person once it is born. Until then, I consider it a potential person. That may be cold, but I don't care.

Exactly. I may have kids in the future, but at the moment it would mean going off my medications and... that's just not going to happen right now. I value not being crazy and knowing what's going on way, way too much.

It's just. Augh. Everyone makes this out to be about things that... it's just not really about, at heart.
