Doormat Philosophy - Or why I had a really hard time sitting quietly through a grove workshop

Feb 02, 2009 15:18

Yesterday, Cedarlight Grove was holding what had been advertised as a prayer bead workshop conducted by an associate of a member who was not a Pagan himself. As I'm working through how to make my own Hermes prayer beads (after I finish another long overdue project), I thought it would be a good thing to go and get some ideas. Workshop did not ( Read more... )

*applause* In this case, you are preaching to the choir, but WORD.

This is why even though I find some Buddhist principles to be of worth, I could never be Buddhist. Same shit, basically. I don't get the world-denying, self/ego-annihilation religions either.

People like this I sincerely hope never get slammed with anything serious; they don't have to tools to deal with real problems and their coping skills won't weather the storm for long. It will be be ugly.

Buddhism was interesting for a while until I came up to that. I don't love this world, but I don't see the point in renouncing it either; its not all bad and it is what we got, won't get any better by turning your back on it (I also don't really believe that Otherworlds are necessarily better, different sorts of problems maybe, but I don't really believe in perfection or paradise). And being human isn't in itself a bad thing, figuring out who I really am and being that person has become a a spiritual goal and one Hermes actively encourages (especially since my identity had been largely repressed during the abuse). Again, I don't see the point in doing otherwise.

Funny- I often find myself hoping they'll get hit with something major so they see just how insanely wrong they are. I guess I'm more vindictive.

That guy's preaching is what I refer to as "Shoving Sunshine Up My Ass", with a good helping of "blame the victim" added. It's bullshit.

Spent too much time talking about other things. Don't know, but it did seem as though, by the time I got there, plans had changed.

It must be nice to have lived a bullshit free life and be able to cling to beliefs like that. It must be nice to get to think that way. Sadly, we have to know better instead.

That is good to hear, I was kind of hoping someone who knew better would be able to say that.

Sure, I'm part of the choir, but I can't agree with you enough. I just -- well, I wanted to say more, but I can't find the words. I completely and totally agree with you.

Thank you. After hearing things like this (and seeing the nods it was getting), I do sometimes need to be reminded sane people still exist. :-)
