The dress and original fabric ended up being great inspiration for me. I pulled my sewing machine out and actually completed the project yesterday! I've had several ideas for sewing projects over the years, but never followed through (I have a stack of lightweight denim to make myself a new skirt with that's been sitting there for a couple months now)
I'm so glad the fabric inspired you to complete a project. I would love to see the pants you made and see how you used the two fabrics! I'm sure it's fantastic!
I don't actually read LJ much, and when I do, it's usually from the list of people I know well, because I can't keep up with my whole friends page, but welcome! I did notice that you seem to have several shared names there.
I didn't know you could commission a custom print fabric before - or had even thought about it enough to look. A little pricey, but not too bad for custom. They say that solid dark colors may be blotchy or streak, but ... the fabric I got is a nice clear print, only 'issue' is the black is at best a dark grey. But I knew to expect it not be blackest black of night and vibrant colors, and for my project, that was fine.
They actually warn you about large expanses of dark colors if you read their FAQ/ordering info for designing patterns.
Very dark grey/dirty black isn't true black, but it should still work for life - heck, it's more realistic. Monitor's don't do true black. Even black has a little light in it. ;-)
Cost: Fabric (3 yards + 1 yard, at $18/yard + Shipping, - 10% for using my own design) - about $72
Grommets - $6? (for a pack of 12)

Yeah, that's about it beyond things like sewing supplies.

I absolutely freaking love this. I keep thinking of making something simiar, but not using black for the background since spoonflower kinda sucks it when it comes to black. That said, this is the sort of thing i would make crib bedding out of and little girl dresses!
Yeah, it does suck as black. It comes out as dark grey. It actually matches fairly well to some dark grey stuff I have.
You could definitely do it on other colors. Perhaps make the background white or light, and the colors darker. Would make for awesome dresses and bedding. Get the young geeks started early. ;-)
I really should make a skirt out of this stuff ;-)
