Tetris-Style Block Pattern Fabric

About two weeks ago, a URL got passed around to a blog entry featuring a Tetris Dress, using fabric designed for the blogger by Jenny at Chronically Uncool.

This is awesome.

I have an idea for something that I'd love to use the fabric for (not that I ever actually finish any of the sewing projects I come up with), and wanted some. She'd released the source file under creative commons, and I'd downloaded it, but looking at the source file, I realized I could do better. Okay, 'everyone' says they can do better, but it's just talk. Few people actually make the effort.

I had four issues with the original:
  1. The file was anti-aliased. That didn't make sense in this case, especially as it was a very high resolution TIF (42" @ 150 DPI wide). The image looked like it'd either been saved as a JPG or scaled along the way.
  2. The file was only designed to print onto 42" wide fabric, but Spoonflower supports upto 58" (and at first, I thought I might be using a larger print width). Using a larger size would have meant more scaling.
  3. The pattern repeated every 6" or so, which was very noticeable.
  4. Pieces didn't overlap the left/right sides of the pattern

So, I started from scratch. I wanted a longer repeat, and wider print so it could work on any of their fabrics. I ended up going with 15x58" (roughly) - I figured that'd be a big enough repeat without being overkill. The original file at only 6" wide was near Spoonflower's raw size limit, but with TIF compression, I was able to cut my version down to roughly ⅓ of the original's filesize. I used the same colors, block size and spacing as the original version did, but laid the pieces out from scratch, allowing me to overlap them on the left and right for seamless repeat.

To go with the falling block design, I made a dense tile design. Same principle here, but something to be used as accents - collars, pockets, etc. For this, I wanted the whole design to be dense, so I went with a ~13" square, at 90% density, designed to repeat nicely on all four sides. It can be used to tile any size of print.

The fabric can be ordered through Spoonflower via my profile.
The images used to generate the file can be downloaded from here.

I'm releasing this under a Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial Share Alike license. Feel free to use, share, and remix this design for non-commercial projects. If you make a new design derived from this, please attribute the original to me (and I imagine Jenny @ Chronically Uncool, since she did the first version). Derivative works should be released under a similar license. Blah, blah, blah. You know the drill.
