How do you get your dogs to stop barking? and how do you insure that they aren't barking when you aren't at home? My boyfriend and I are getting a place, but the barking is going to make it hard. One person suggested debarking, but that seems cruel.

barking, debarking

We give them a little spank whenever they start barking and tell them in a firm voice, "No". I know that they have those shock bark collars, but, the other method has been working just fine for us.

I think spanking and shock collars are completely inaproppriate for training dogs. You shouldn't have to resort to hitting them to train them. :(

training animals are at the complete discretion of the owner. It's just like parenting. You do what you do, and that's fine. Even though I may not agree with it, I do not voice my opinions about it to you. It's a matter of respect. I would appreciate the same! A parent doesn't like to hear others' input if it's working for them and their children!

I'm not criticizing you for what you said about the dogs (although I wouldn't hit, myself), but I think that parents hitting their children is horrible. It only works for one side of the situation: the parents. The children just stop what they're doing temporarily and suffer from the pain.

I clap. It often gets him to stop. If not, I lightly but firmly hold his muzzle closed and say "no bark!" in a loud/deep voice.

I used a water bottle, because nothing else worked....although now all I have to do is spray it near them, and it gets their attention, but most of the time now, I just say Ace/McGinty, get them to look at me, NO! Leave it!, and they move away from whatever they were barking at.

I guess the main part is to get their attention on you in a way that works for them/you, then move them away from what they were barking at while saying what you want them to respond to.
