I don't hate my job...

I don't hate my job, just the children I teach. Some things I was thinking, but refrained from saying today.

  • Your mom said it was hard too.
  • ...of course it is my fault that you cut class and I am smart enough to figure it out.
  • Remember, I already graduated from high school.
  • "There are no stupid questions,"  only stupid children.

When I was a kid, when a teacher came in the classroom,
the day-on kid called "all rise!" and we all stood at attention
and bowed at once. Then the teacher greeted us, we sat down, o
ur back straight, with our hands on the desk or on the lap.
We didn't dare talk in class unless allowed.
Teachers were there to teach and because of that, to be respected.

Well, we tended to be very judgemental when they didn't seem worth utmost respect, and I hated all that discipline, but it might have been a good thing sometimes.

That is a dream of mine; to have that kind of respect from my students. Overall it isn't that bad, they respect me because I respect them.

The problems I deal with are a result of me calling out a bad behavior and following through with the consequence. The teenage angst would have them blame ME for being a jerk.

Whatever. I get over it and move on. I also try not to tell them what I really think.

I tell them everyday, "I'm in this job because I love being the center of attention. So, pay attention to me. I do this for fun."

Half of the stuff that does slip out... makes me look goofy. My supervisor told me that after a formal observation, "Jackie, you're really goofy with your students, but for some reason it works and they like you and feel comfortable enough to engage in learning."

What I wanted to say, "well of course it WORKS, that is because I am awesome. So why don't you offer me a contracted position instead of this crap long term sub job."

:-)
