It's election day in Hogtown

Oct 25, 2010 11:00

Today we go to the polls to elect a mayor, city council and school board trustees. My ward has a fairly decent incumbent councillor who will be reelected, probably with 80% of the vote, so no big decision there. The big one is the mayoral race. There are three candidates. The first is Rob Ford, a populist who is anti-immigrant, anti city hall, ( Read more... )

The utterly vile Sun is, of course, supporting Ford, perhaps because no openly Fascist candidate is standing.

Win and brilliance.

Difficult decision. Not sure, but I think I'd probably end up doing the same.

I think the problem with tactical voting is that you end up getting what you vote for, as recent UK experience rather proves.

I'm glad you had a good candidate to vote for, and from what I can tell, he'd be my sort of candidate as well, and I'd like to think I'd make the same decision. Of course if Smitherman has any chance, it will be because of people less principled than you, while Ford's chances seem to rest on the idea that proto-Fascists are unlikely to advertise the fact in polls.

The Ford phenomenon is weird. I think he could have paraded in an SS uniform, or for that matter a bunny suit, and it wouldn't have affected his support. He has the backing of people who have been convinced that something is wrong (though nobody seems to know what) and that it needs somebody fresh to fix it. Never mind that Ford has been on council for ever and is very much an insider.

Also, I know this is horribly crass and silly but...

Joey Pantalone is the best name for a mayor of any city EVER.

I snorted out loud at the Sun thing.

Voted for Pantalone. Smitherman would privatize transit. Transit is my single biggest issue (cue remark about trains running on time).

Pants is a good guy and represents good policies. A strong showing, even if he won't win, sends a message that not all of Toronto has drank the Kool-Aid.
