Information on Chicago Neighborhoods

I think I've searched the tags pretty thoroughly, so I apologize right now if this is really redundant for the rest of you in this community.

To start: I am planning on moving to Chicago in the near future. I keep saying that "as soon as I find a job in Chicago, I'm moving there!" (Unfortunately, the more I read the entries about finding work in ( Read more... )

I'm not going to be able to help you much with your specific questions, but there is a real nice thing on Wikipedia which breaks down the various neighborhood in Chicago, and that might provide some good basic info.

And, if you have any question about the safety about a neighborhood, or even a particular building, there's ChicagoCrime.org which lets you sift through all the crime reports for an address, zip code, ward, etc. ... very handy!

wikipedia does a decent job but the neighborhoods in chicago are severe-bordered and change really fast. if you have questions on a specific neighborhood after reading you should probably re-ask.

Haha, well, I've always wanted to live in a big city and Chicago is close enough to "home" that it feels safe. Plus, when I was a kid I used to go to Chicago all the time on weekends during the fall and winter months. :)

I just checked out Craigslist tonight and I was really surprised by how many apartment listings there were there. I've been checking out the Reader on a fairly frequent basis as well. It seems that there are cheaper options on Craigslist. That's an interesting point there about repeat listings. I didn't even think about that. :)

Which neighborhoods to avoid is a harder question to answer than which you should live in. Everyone has a different level of comfort, so what might be good for me might be a crappy neighborhood to you.

What you should do is say "I'm into _________ and I want to live near _________ and I don't want to pay more than ___________. Where should I live."
