It's ridiculous to say that Bush could've done something before this. He declared Louisiana a disaster area BEFORE the hurricane even hit, meaning FEMA, natl guard, red cross and any other relief organization could be there as soon as humanly possible. He made a speech prior to the hurricane hitting warning people on what do to, and urging them to follow warning put forth by local authorities and also stressed the seriousness of the situation. I'm sure you can find the transcript online somewhere. At any rate, research has been done about this. My uncle has worked for the EPA for upwards of 30 years and I talked to him about this and he said it's virtually impossible to pinpoint the cause of hurricanes on one particular factor because so many things go into it and make them so complicated, and therefore there's nearly nothing humans can do to curb the destructiveness of them because trends are so difficult to spot. There is little to nothing Bush could've done that he didn't do.

More can always be done chi1088 September 1 2005, 22:15:39 UTC
More can always be done to make it easier for areas to handle emergency. That's what I am saying. I am saying maybe this area should've been looked at some time in the last years so that it could be ready for bad hurricanes. It clearly was not prepared. When they rebuild now though, as Hastert says, the plan is to rebuild intelligently so that this city below sea level can handle disasters like this better. They don't have to move...they just need to be better prepared.

And now when I think about it, I am not upset with Bush for the disarray that Louisiana/Gulfport, Mississippi is in. I am upset because he can do more about the prices of gasoline and isn't. This man has huge ties with those companies. But he doesn't want to upset his corporate buddies.
