CSU: This Time Around - Chapter 1

"AARGGGHHH!!"

A man, mid 40s, woke up from his deep slumber, turned to his clock, it's 4 am. He gets up from his bed groggily, looked through the window and saw a lady on the ground with a man on top of her. He pulled up his double hung window, shouted from where he was. "Hey, get a room!!!"

The attacker quickly got up and ran away and Jeffrey went back to sleep, only to be woken up by another same scream. He gets up, irritated, again, from the window, he saw the same thing. A man on top of the woman. He was about to shout when the woman screamed.

"Help!! Jeffrey!!"

Upon hearing his name, the old man recognized the lady, it was his neighbour, living right across where he lives. "Get away from her!!!"

Again, the attacker got up and left. Jeffrey stood for a while to see where did the man ran to, but the lamp post provides little light. His eyes went to his neighbour, getting up so slowly from the ground, staggering her way to the garage. He waited for a while before going back to sleep.

"Aaaarrgggghhhh...."

A faint scream was heard but Jeffrey was already in deep slumber.

Kim JunSu was about to leave for a short break when his secretary informed him something important. Jung YunJin, the Senior Counselor, wanted to see him in her office right away. JunSu walked out of his office, took the lift up to the 15th floor, 10 levels above his.

JunSu knocked twice on the door before entering, was surprised to see a huge man standing behind YunJin's desk, talking on the phone, dressed in a black three-piece business suit. The man noticed him as JunSu did. He is Kang HoDong, Boston Police Commissioner. He placed a hand over the phone's mouthpiece.

"I'm sorry. I was looking for Counselor Jung, she paged me" JunSu bowed at the man.

"I know. Please come in and shut the door" He said, returning to his phone. JunSu did as he was told.

Kang HoDong was by far, the most respected man to hold the commissioner's job, the highest position inside the Boston Police Headquarters. When his name had been thrown into the ring, replacing the previous corrupted candidate, the Boston media had chose him as the 'shining-hope' to bust high crime areas. Three years into his term, Boston's homicide rate plunged to its lowest rate in ages.

JunSu stood firmly in front of the desk, head turns to catch a quick glimpse around the office of his boss. A rare occasion for JunSu, that is, because the Senior Counselor is always busy with attending functions and conference, traveling almost everyday to every region, to meet with fellow advocates.

"I've to go" HoDong said then hung up. He motioned JunSu to sit on one of the chairs in front of YunJin's government-issued desk. "Counselor Kim, are you familiar with CSU?"

"Crime Scene Unit" JunSu nodded. The newly formed unit was an idea of HoDong, consists of specialized group made up of the police department's top young investigators responsible for the city's homicide crimes. JunSu had heard of them through colleagues about how they solved a case months back, involving murder of a college girl who went missing, only to be found a few days later at a home area in Mildred Ave. The unit caught the killer within 2 days.

"What if I am to tell you that you are to be placed there?" HoDong asked. A hand on his tie, messes with the knot.

"May I ask why?" JunSu's eyes never leave the man, observing.

HoDong paused and stared at the young man for a few seconds before telling. "CSU currently are a little shortage of young potentials. Many left, I'm sure you've heard"

"I've heard" JunSu nodded. It was during lunch in the cafetaria the other day, some trainess talked about many young recruits left mortified, dealing with too many horrific cases that some seek help from therapist by the end of the day.

"I requested Counselor Jung for a solution and she recommended me to have a guidance, a professional to keep the unit in progress" HoDong leaned his back against the backchair.

"And this professional would be me" JunSu concluded, calm.

"Counselor Kim, I have been keeping an eye on you ever since you stepped into Forensic Institute. You scored highest within your batch and majoring in Forensic Psychology" HoDong read JunSu's personal details from the yellow file with a fresh red 'CONFIDENTIAL' stamped at the upper corner. "Don't you want to put that into good use?"

"I did"

"You studied cases on HISU?"

"I have attended some of the lectures" Junsu answered. HISU was formed under Assistant Commissioner Kim JongKook, stands for Homicidal Investigation Support Unit, a group set up to help other units, particularly CSU in solving crimes.

"I would have guess that you love homicide to attend that class and scored pretty well for the test" HoDong closed the file and placed nicely on the desk.

"Am I given time to think it over?" JunSu asked politely, thought of asking his boss for the sudden recommendation. Managing court cases had made him somewhat better in analyzing body languages whether one is telling the truth and judging by the commissioner's responses, weren't too promising.

"Make it quick! I have a meeting with the CSU team in 15 minutes"

JunSu, now, seated on one of the many chairs in the CSU meeting room. He agreed early on after much thought. JunSu hated crime in a personal sort of way. He had always wanted to become a detective. JunSu lived with his family not far from here, in Roxbury when he was much younger. His neighbourhood was a rag, almost every single day, gun shots could be heard and bullets were zinging around. They couldn't go outside to play, afraid of being shot, couldn't go near the window either. Life for the then teenage JunSu went from bad to worse when his mother got killed while in the playground, accompany his younger sister. Some cars past by, shooting aimlessly, just to make sure the person they wanted to kill, die. He did, so does everyone else. JunSu was left alone to fend for himself.

He worked as a grave digger to support his way through college. He graduated a few years later and got a job as a counselor in a law firm before furthering his studies in Forensic Psychology. Dealing with attorneys were boring, he's young and he needed more challenging ones. He first encountered HISU for research purposes, only to enrol fully when a case similar to his, happened. He never had a chance to get into field, just reading from the reports to get some clues, occasionally voiced a thought when needed.

KNOCK KNOCK

JunSu turned to the door. There, standing is a tall boy, wearing a full white attire with a black tie.

"JunSu-hyung, why are you here?"

"Just like you" JunSu smiled. Shim ChangMin is the younger son of his boss. A genius, graduated from a well-known university, majored in Forensic Arts at the age of 16 but was deemed too young then to join the CSU. Thus, placing the boy in another unit to improve his lab skills, he requested on his own. No reason was given though.

"You're in CSU too? Good and here I thought, I'll be alone" ChangMin took a seat next to him, breaths the sign of relieve.

"Since when you have a problem of being alone?" JunSu raised a brow.

"Nevermind" ChangMin waved his little hand to brush the topic off.

KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK

JunSu and ChangMin turned to the opened door once again, and finally, walking in from the door, is the infamous Jung YunHo. Both JunSu and ChangMin stood up to greet the young chief. Two others walked in, one with a huge grin and another with a walking stick. HoDong came in last, closing the door to start the meeting.

"Good evening, everyone" HoDong fidgets a little, taking out a hanky to wipe off his excessive sweat forming non-stop from his forehead. "Welcome to the CSU"

"Why are you sweating, hyung? It's cold in here" Said the one with the walking stick, pulling up his collar to cover his neck, sitting farthest away from them.

"Um...these are your two colleagues. Kim JunSu and Shim ChangMin" HoDong quickly hides the hanky and motioned to the two newcomers. "JunSu is a member of HISU and ChangMin here, got a high score in the recent intellectual exams"

"I'm Park YooChun, profiler" The grin grew wider as they shook hands. JunSu's hair stood up when he noticed the profiler winked at him.

"Kim JaeJoong, M.E" Said the one farthest away, waving at them.

"Jung YunHo, Chief" Said the one sitting right opposite them, in a monotonous manner.
