Pennypack Park

This morning, tawdryjones and I rode our bikes to Pennypack Park in NE Philly. The roundtrip from Center City was about 40 miles (Google says 38, but we had a few detours). The park itself is beautiful, a great paved trail that runs alongside a creek, lots of ups-and-downs and twists-and-turns to keep the trail interesting. We heard many birds and saw ( Read more... )

The bike ride? Absolutely. Bastille Day brunch? Depends. Were we the monarchy or the third estate?

My iPhone/the Google Maps app have been mind-bogglingly helpful to me on this vacation. That I can get public transit instructions anywhere instantly with just a few keystrokes is amazing.

Moon pies, what a time to be alive!

Torresdale definitely can't compete with Kensington Ave., but we saw a lot of police activity for a Sunday morning, and something about the multiple hand-painted "Tire Repair" signs didn't feel uplifting.

On the other hand, there was at least a Dunkin' Donuts--I had the bizarre thought at one point that there was an eerie lack of Starbucks--and there were some unusual houses with gabled-roof facades, maybe around the 5400 block.

I just looked at photos of houses on Trulia near the regional rail stop, and it looks much different (and only a few blocks away). Reading a little about the history of the area endears Tacony to me, I'm developing a soft spot.

And I'll have to amend my post--it looks like Pennypack Park is pretty easy to get to from the Holmesburg stop on the Trenton line. Not that taking bikes on regional rail is all that easy--I'm sure they'd love me dragging my bike through Market East. But it might be worth it for a nature walk sometime.
