Hitsugaya glanced at her sharply, eyes narrowed. No, meaning that he had been actively trying not to walk on it and failed. He just hadn't mentioned the failing. "I walked on it," he said levelly. "Hard not to when I'm working."

He shrugged and leaned back on his hands while she looked at his knee. "It didn't seem bad enough to seek medical attention when it happened. It's only been in the last half of today that it's gotten bad." It had only felt like he'd twisted his knee a little, at first. Bothersome and painful, sure, but Hitsugaya had dealt with worse and done it without troubling the Fourth for unnecessary healing.

He winced a bit, reflexively, as she called on the yudou and started healing the tears. Stupid reaction, but it was what it was. He hadn't really liked being poked and prodded at before meeting the Octava. Shifting at her question, he scowled.

Did she really need to know what he'd done? He glanced at her, saw she was definitely serious, and sighed. He had no desire to be difficult, or to annoy Unohana ( ... )

Unohana didn't even lift an eyebrow at the glare Hitsugaya-taichou shot her way. Even the most patient of people could be irritable when they were in pain, and he was not the most patient of people at the best of times ( ... )

"I'll keep that in mind." Given his predisposition for being unlucky, Hitsugaya was fairly sure something like this would happen again. It wasn't a stretch to think so. He had a track record and a reputation, after all.

It took quite an amount of willpower to keep from moving his knee out of her immediate reach. It wasn't uncomfortable and the pain was lessening; it just... He simply felt like he had to move. He tried alleviating that feeling with lightly tapping the floor with his fingers, but that lasted all of three seconds before he annoyed himself.

Goddamn it, he was a basket case. Hurting himself in mud and then couldn't sit still when the healer came by to help.

He nodded toward Unohana. "Thank you." Perhaps it didn't sound like much in the grand scheme of things, but he didn't say such things lightly. Her not saying anything about this certainly deserved a thank you.

The thanks were unnecessary, of course. Keeping matters confidential was part of her job. But the words were not ones that Hitsugaya-taichou gave easily, and she accepted them with proper grace ( ... )

Tension bled away when she withdrew her hand. He really was a basket case sometimes. That was something he just had to get over. Never mind he twitched at healers all his life.

He moved his leg gingerly, carefully extending his knee. (That was probably against orders, but he didn't actually put any weight or pressure on it.) He nodded once; it felt much better. It was still tender, still a bit painful, but nowhere near the throbbing pain it had been approaching when he'd finally called for help.

Sighing softly -- mostly in relief -- he nodded at Unohana's instructions. "I'll stay at the desk for a couple days." Easy enough to figure out what she was really saying. She could have just said it aloud, but in the light of previous comments, perhaps it was for the best that she didn't. He didn't need to react to condescension that was unintended.

"Thank you for coming so quickly." And for not saying anything.
