Watch out, the monkey is thinking again

Apparently I should not be reading metafandom. Some of the things I find there will piss me off to holy hell, as for example the incredible wtf-ery of the latest "slash is sexist" essay. Now, generally I don't mind, because there are parts of slash that are depressingly sexist, but this made me lose my shit. And I just read a third or so of it before I got ( Read more... )

what the fucking fuck?, meta, oh for god's sake, fanfic, slash, sigh, thinky thoughts, fandom, feminism

I went to some lectures on gender roles and equality last term, and I realized how much truth was in that statement. We are born and raised to be different, and I can't see where the line goes between the biological differences and the societal differences between the sexes. It's pretty interesting and pretty horrifying, really.

I mean, you try to not behave differently with boys and girls, especially when they're young, but it's really difficult when that's pretty much the only thing that defines them when they're babies. They're "that person's kid" and "boy/girl" and that's it. It's easier when they get a little older and they become more of a tiny little person and not just this little bundle that makes noise.

And there I go again, sorry. Gender theory is interesting, but it breaks my brain. :)

Thank you for reading though!

Are you a mindreader? This is pretty much the same thing I wrote in my response to that essay (but eventually decided not to send because it would've been a giant waste of time - she wasn't listening other people's opinions anyway...)

Like you said - we live in a patriarchy. But there's a difference between acknowledging and recognising patriarchal structures and using them as an excuse for everything that's wrong with the world. If we see ourselves as oppressed victims of the patriarchy we will automatically become victims, and I'd like to think that we're more powerful than that. I mean, women are awesome! But men are awesome too, and people are awesome. Unless we realise that we'll never get an equal world.

Fandom hivemind, honey, fandom hivemind. I firmly believe that this comes down to meta as well. *nods*

Too damn true. What it comes down to is that we're all human, and by being human we're simulatenously glaring morons and completely awesome. I don't think that there should be such a huge difference between women and men, and even if there is a difference, that should not mean inequality. Also, I believe that if you're aware of this power imbalance, you can raise your children (or whatever) to be better equipped to handle the inherent sexism than the generations before.

Man, it just hit me, I've been doing feministic rants since fourth grade. One can only hope that my arguments have gotten better since then. :)
