Oct 07, 2008 18:34

This fic has timed out from Ancient's Gate 15: The Way It Is. Set early in Season 7, this is over 8,000 words of Jack and Daniel first time drama and angst as the men come to terms with Daniel's returning memories and the pain it brings.

Rated NC-17, it has spoilers for Orpheus, Small Victories and Abyss. MASSIVE thanks to mlevinsand

Very nice! I like fic that takes them from something that seems unfixable to happy together. I also like ones that deal with Daniel getting memories back. I always wanted to see more on the show dealing with him trying to settle back into a life he doesn't remember. Love your happy ending. :-)

Love your happy ending.

You know me - you're practically guaranteed a happy ending with my fic. I think I've only written ONE piece that didn't have a resolution that at least gave hope if not actual happiness. :D

That's one reason I like your stories so much! :-)

I was reading through this again and noticed something I missed the first time:

“It doesn’t matter what you thought, or what we want.” Jack picked his jacket off of the chair and tossed it to him. “This is the way it is.”

"what we want" This time this suddenly jumped out at me as Jack telling Daniel (intentionally or not) that even though Jack is convinced that this is something he can't have, it's still something that he wants. Not surprising that apparently Daniel missed it during the shock of that scene.

Or I may be completely off in left field. :-)

If you're out in left field, then you're standing next to me, because that's exactly what I was going for with that. Jack really wants there to be a "We", an "us". At that moment he's freaking at the thought of "cheating" on the military, but that "we" slips out.

Poor woobie.

Poor both woobies.

It's the nature of the show not to give us enough of what we want. I'm so glad fanfic like this does a better job of filling in on what we didn't get to see, above all, between these two. Nicely done; thanks for this! :)

I especially enjoyed these great snapshots of Jack: There were two images of Jack before him [...] emotions engendered by each image were confusing.

It was as though the only way he could talk about his feelings was to sneak the words out while the rest of his attention was absorbed in some mundane thing.

Wonderful details.

Wonderful details.

Thank you! I could picture everything so clearly in my mind, but I wasn't sure I was able to get all the details out.

Glad you liked it!

This was excellent. Really great choice of time in canon to look at. Jack strikes me as very *him* -- I like the way it tied back into how he lost Sara, too. But also just, great handling of his body language and all. And I liked the point about how Daniel, descended, is a stronger advocate for himself than he was. Great job. :)

Poor Jack - making the same mistakes over again. We've all been there or seen our friends do it. At least this time, he was finally ready to try a better way!.

I think this is an excellent character study of Jack - all the little fiddling he does, the facial ticks and so on.

And, as others have said, it's an area of the show that was glossed over; but then, hey!, that's what fic is for :D

Thank you for this, I really enjoyed it.

Thanks for the feedback on Jack. He's such a physical character that much of what he is, is visual. It's not just what he says and how he says it, but what he's doing at any given moment colors our perception of the character. That can be difficult to do in writing.
