|Ding, Dong, the Vampire King is Dead|

The thing about life as a human that Mitchell was realizing was that the bumps in the road turned out to be a whole lot more stressful from this end. Not that he hadn't had his fair share (less than, really) of heartache, stress and worry as a vampire back home. But through all that, every heartbreaking, earth-shattering, life-changing thing, the ( Read more... )

Raising a brow immediately at his reaction, Sookie crossed her arms and pushed herself further back on the mattress, toeing her shoes off and propping one leg on the other knee. "What could I have done?" she asked, blinking in slight surprise. Not that Sookie thought herself especially violent or vicious- even as a voice sounded in her head, lilting and teasing, recognizing the bloodthirsty streak in her, the part of her that was ruthless when it came to protecting the people she loved- but there was still something which didn't sit right about the statement. The flippant air Mitchell had taken. "Well, I don't know, Mitchell, it isn't exactly like I haven't killed a man before, and there's already been plenty of other humans and vampires alike killed in my name ( ... )

While Sookie's moods had a tendency to twist left and right at a moment's notice, she still felt the slight flutter in her chest, tension that always came after a fight. Months ago, she might've taken advantage of that suppressed energy, but more than ever, the island was pushing her towards patience wherever she could find it. Caution, whenever she could remind herself. No matter how much she wanted to believe that the fight was over, there was no doubt in her mind that this topic seemed to come up time and time again- to keep from another altercation later on, something would have to change. And for something like this, it could only happen with time.

With another breath, she nodded again, easing Mitchell's hand off her shoulder until she could lace her fingers with his and give his hand a small squeeze. "Sorry I ruined your visit," she murmured, wincing lightly as she looked up.

"No," he said. One hand in hers, Mitchell moved to loop his arm around her waist. He didn't pull her closer; it didn't feel like the right moment for that. But he did want to hold her, even if loosely.

"Nothing's ruined." Bending slightly, he kissed her forehead and strengthened his smile. "We can still spend some time together, if you want. Haven't wasted the whole afternoon arguing."

"And hopefully, we won't ever make a habit out of that," Sookie nodded, for a moment thinking of her own parents back in the day, how often the two of them fought- whether it was over money or over Sookie's strange abilities. She'd managed to quiet herself down about them over time, which had improved matters, but the thought didn't come to her as a warning or as an example of what the two of them needed to avoid. Instead, it reminded her of the fact that the road could never be constantly smooth, no matter how well two people got along together.

Leaning up, she pressed a kiss to his cheek, though the touch was soft and lingered. That seemed right, for the moment.

"But I'd love to. Arguing or not, I can't think of anyone I'd rather spend the afternoon with."
