There's a big difference between having a voice, and being able to sing. Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston are great examples of voices that can't sing. A singer needs to be able to tell a story, to make you feel things, not just do contortions with their voice. Two great singers with very average voices are Johnny Cash and Leonard Cohen.

And Axl Rose will now be walking around bragging about how he has the best voice in the world, but if anyone has had the displeasure to see him live in the last decade will know, things change and decades of smoking and drinking are not friends of your big powerful voice.

I couldn't disagree more. For me personally, I think they do just that (particularly Whitney Houston). I guess that's what cool about this chart, is seeing their ranges clearly delineated. And Huff-Po's caveat was pretty much on the mark I thought (vocal range isn't the ONLY element in great talent).

OK... Perhaps I'm using the wrong words to try to delineate these two things. Telling stories and making you feel things are emotional and fairly subjective.

There is something that Leonard Cohen does that Whitney Houston doesn't, do you agree?

I was surprised by Bowie's voice...I would have thought it went higher.
