From dust to a universe

I've finally been to see Inception (several of my movie going friends had seen it and hated it, actually), and I loved it. It was terrifically intricate and wildly entertaining. Even if it's kind of like watching a talented magician move his hands very quickly, distracting me from what's really going on, or on this case, think to much about the ( Read more... )

I think the fact that there's so little canon about A&E is actually part of the appeal--in many ways, they are both just archetypes (much in the way the guys in popslash were) and that leaves a lot of room for an author to insert their own interpretations and build their own characters. Add to the fact that the canon gives wide berth of imaginative settings and scenarios that fandom loves (while handwaving the science of it) and you have a recipe for magic!

Yeah, the film itself does indeed give you a whole universe of ideas to work with. But I was surprised how little A & E were in it, in relation to how extatic fandom is about them.

As a reader, I need more than that. And when I read the stories written, I get more. But it always amazes me how you writer can build so much from so little. If you compare it with SPN, where there's SO MUCH canon, it's almost overwhelming.

Yeah, that's one thing I don't care for in SPN--the massive amounts of canon. I have a pretty poor memory for canon just in general, and I have no desire to rewatch 5 seasons of SPN to learn how Dean takes his coffee. Also, the fact that there's so much canon, to me, makes some of their characterizations pretty clearly defined and leads to lots of fic being prone to OOCness because it's hard to work in gay romances in a show that has examined so many facets of these guys' lives. Not that it can't be done, of course, but it makes it that much harder for writers to make a believable story.
