Sci Fi and Fantasy Death and Resurrection Scenes

Apr 07, 2012 11:36

Okay, trying to think of death and resurrection scenes for the next 'Church of the Latter Day Geeks' service and these are what I've got so far. Any other suggestions?

TV
Buffy the Vampire Slayer: 5.22 ‘The Gift’; 6.22 ‘Grave’

Stargate SG-1: (Daniel) 5.21 ‘Meridian’; 7.01 ‘Fallen’

Supernatural: Dean 3.16 ‘No rest for the wicked’; 4.01 ‘Lazarus Rising’;

I'd agree with the first point since in almost every case it's being done as a sacrifice. Actually the strongest parallels would be Five into Six with the toxin, Nine into Ten and then Ten into Eleven.

I was thinking 9 into 10 and 10 into 11, but I hadn't thought about 5 into 6. I'll have to go have another look at it.

Sometimes I love my job - this is all research for a church service!

I love Five into Six because of the immediacy of sacrifice - we see Peri acknowledging what was done for her (which we don't in the case of Nine and Rose, and I don't think even Wilf really understands what Ten has given up for him).

And yes, life is hard. *lol*

I can probably do 7th to 8th doctor and 9th to 10th Doctor as well, but only if it won't overload the footage with DW. :D

So you're only after sacrifice-types scenes? I can think of other death-resurrections, but they are much more selfish.

Only one that might work is the scene in Misfits where Nathan dies and then comes back to life inside his coffin. I can't remember how he dies though. Might have to ask Ash how relevant it is.

Yes, mainly sacrifice-type deaths because I'm paralleling the crucifixion - which would absolutely appal Russell T. Davies because he's an anti-Christian atheist. While Joss Whedon is a Judeo-Christian-myth-obsessed atheist, so I think he'd be fine with this.

I was wondering about Carson in Stargate Atlantis. He died in that whole weird exploding tumour incident, but he refused to leave because he wanted to save the patient or whatever... then he came back as a clone. It's been ages since I watched it, but I might be able to find it. I have the DVDs.

{SHERLOCK SPOILERS.....}
Also would you include Sherlock in there? He doesn't really die, but he loses his whole reputation etc. and fakes his death to save John and the other people close to him. And we know he's not dead at the end of the episode, but his big reappearance hasn't happened yet (as per the books).

ooh also what about The Matrix? I mean Neo dies and then he magically comes back stronger than ever!

Xena and Gabrielle died frequently for either the world, random innocents or each other. Most horrifically in the one where they were crucified by the Romans.

I'm sure there was something with Sisko, "the voice the prophets" on DS9 and Jadzia into Ezri.

Also with Buffy I'd give mention to Spike dying in 7.22 before coming back as human in Angel.

Oh and Aslan, of course!

Definitely yes to Spike and Aslan, although with Aslan I think I'll do a reading from the book, rather than add him to the vid.

I wonder if my vidder can add Xena being crucified to the vid, and how much flack I'd cop from scary Christians if she did? After all, the Romans crucified lots and lots of people; that scene isn't simply equating Xena and Jesus.

[Note: a lot of people believe this show is best watched upspoiled, and these are fairly serious spoilers. That said:

Farscape: "Die Me Dichotomy" and "Season of Death"

Hmm, I'venever got round to watching Farscape and it's on my longterm, must watch sometime, list. So maybe I'd better keep avoiding spoilers?
