Sci Fi and Fantasy Death and Resurrection Scenes

Apr 07, 2012 11:36

Okay, trying to think of death and resurrection scenes for the next 'Church of the Latter Day Geeks' service and these are what I've got so far. Any other suggestions?

TV
Buffy the Vampire Slayer: 5.22 ‘The Gift’; 6.22 ‘Grave’

Stargate SG-1: (Daniel) 5.21 ‘Meridian’; 7.01 ‘Fallen’

Supernatural: Dean 3.16 ‘No rest for the wicked’; 4.01 ‘Lazarus Rising’;

death, my life is weird, church of latter day geeks, tv, supernatural, pop culture, ministry, fannish obsessions

Every regeneration of the doctor

Gandalf the grey becomes Gandalf the white....

I'd agree with the first point since in almost every case it's being done as a sacrifice. Actually the strongest parallels would be Five into Six with the toxin, Nine into Ten and then Ten into Eleven.

I was thinking 9 into 10 and 10 into 11, but I hadn't thought about 5 into 6. I'll have to go have another look at it.

Sometimes I love my job - this is all research for a church service!

I love Five into Six because of the immediacy of sacrifice - we see Peri acknowledging what was done for her (which we don't in the case of Nine and Rose, and I don't think even Wilf really understands what Ten has given up for him).

And yes, life is hard. *lol*

five to six, and nine to ten, definitely in my world. But 10 to 11 more so as Wilf isn't a long standing friend as much...he's more of an aquaintance and that makes that more powerful.

Its easier to give up your life for a friend than a stranger.

But, depending on how much time charis wants to give for explanations, 10 to 11 would take more clarification than the others because we don't see a simple cause to effect, which was what I meant about immediacy.

Not that this is perhaps the setting for such a discussion, but I'm also not entirely sure that, in the Doctor's eyes, Wilf is just an acquaintance. His connections to Donna would surely make Wilf more than that (not to mention the indirect link to Astrid). If he was really going to save a total stranger, he would have rescued the bloke who got stuck in there in the first place (and yes, I totally believe that 10 would have done it as well).

Ah well, now you're getting into practicalities *G* and i'll take that point!

I'm not sure either, I was hesitant to put that down as by his nature the Doctor is extremely generous and giving -including his friendship and yes, his life. Hmm. I'll retract that comment, except for the last statement ...but you so very rarely see someone give their life for a total stranger.

In that last point we are in total agreement, and I admit it's something I would love to see the Doctor do as long as the circumstances were right so that it made sense rather than being done in a token manner.

I don't want to give explanations for the individual scenes; people will know some of them, if not all of them, and it's the overall impression I'm going for: self-sacrifice can save the world and death isn't the end. That's what Sci Fi and Fantasy do so well; they show that sacrifice CAN literally save the world and they show something happening after death, where 'realism' only hints that maybe this life isn't the end. I bury people "in the sure and certain hope of the resurrection" and Fantasy and Sci Fi show what that "sure and certain hope" can look like in various worlds.

Then my feeling would be that the Fifth Doctor is perhaps the most self-explanatory without having to chop and change between scenes, particularly since the Doctor himself seems uncertain in that one whether he is actually going to regenerate or not with his bit about "feels different this time".

Still, it's your church and you can use what you like! ;-)

Yes, and yes. But I can't have all the Doctor's regenerations or it's going to be a very unbalanced video.

Where's your icon from? I'm having a mental blank, but I know I've seen it.

Heh, its the episode with the caroinites and Shakespeare..the Shakespeare code.

*Grins*

I like it becuase it reminds me sometimes a good flirt is all we're looking for. It doesn't have to be about sex all the time, it can be simply appreciating each other and reminding each ohter that we appreciate them...that they are worth appreciating.

We don't do enough appreciating.

I knew I knew that scene!

Indeed, given my celibacy for me it's never about sex and always about appreciation.

heh, i've been celibate for the last..seven or eight years? People think I have far more sex than I do. But appreciating...appreciating never gets old.

actually let me point out...*G* Its the Doctor. He's awesome and deserves to unbalance a video. But that's just me. ;-)
