Alas, I had work when the draft started. I did think seriously about exiting at High Street and heading over, especially since I would have only missed the first three picks or so. But I was hungry, so food and lounging in front of my TV to watch won out.
Many Whalers fans became sympathetic to Columbus in '97 when The Greek was waving the team under our noses and nearly ruined our expansion bid. When we were awarded the team, I know quite a few on the Whalers ML said that they were taking up Columbus as their new allegiance, until the NHL returned to Hartford. And there was a guy I knew in grad school who was a Whalers fan, from Poughkeepsie, and he's still living here the last I knew.
I think that everywhere that Bettman goes he should have the Whalers logo thrown in his face. When Raleigh doesn't even turn out for the defending champs...when there are empty seats during the Cup finals...there's something seriously wrong with Mr. Bettman's southward expansion.
yeah the greek was going to put the team in an old airplane hangar. that would have been a circus!
people have argued that columbus should not have a team, but if the team is winning the fans show up. in nashville and carolina, even if they are winning, there are too many empty seats - what does that tell you?
I think that Columbus got a lot of new respect this last weekend. Everything I've heard about the turnout and such has been positive. One of the most well-attended drafts they've had.
Columbus is more deserving of a team than most of the other recent expansion cities. Just look at the attendence in Atlanta.
I totally agree. The team and city did a great job in welcoming the league and the fans came from all over. It was a great draft for the fans and for the entire league.
I'm thinking Nashville, and they have a good team and might be moving. Stupid.
