I don't trust any government agency/business so I do everything in person. Look up your local social security office and make an appointment with them. I was in and out in 30 minutes tops with my new last name and a receipt showing I had changed my name for the DMV. I didn't need to get my new social before going to the DMV. Take everything (all originals- no copies) to the DMV and be prepared to take a new picture. After this, it's all a piece of cake. When you change your name at the bank, make sure you take your marriage license; most places will not take copies. It took about a month after getting my marriage license (hello out of state wedding) to have everything in my new name. The only thing I left in my maiden name are my student loans because I am lazy and it's all linked to my social anyway.

I think they make it so damn hard to change your name after marriage.

I second doing it yourself if at all possible! Mailing off your social security card is scary!

I went into a social security building with no appt and a marriage license and ID. Probably about an hour later I had a temporary SS document with my new name. A couple weeks later they mailed me a new SS Card with my new name. In the meantime, I went to DMV and got a new license with my temporary SS card. Then you can usually just call your credit cards and they don't even ask for proof half the time.
