"That's Lisa; she talks once in a while."

I play Minecraft online with some friends. We have microphones so we can chat, but I often find it overwhelming and mute the speakers. If it goes on long enough, every word feels like someone's slapping me across the face, which obviously is not the intent of the usually chatty and friendly goings-on; so it's better for me to just mute it and fall ( Read more... )

You can read at what, 4-10 times that you can listen to speech? (For things like politics I now have a rule "transcript or it didn't happen" because I won't waste the extra time required to listen, especially since I can't skim the boring bits).
So a lot of people are going to find your typing convenient.
Also, lots of nerds are shy, so have our own reasons for not wanting to talk - you're not hurting anyone, so your decision to type not talk deserves to be respected.

I've noticed that nerds are the least likely to find solely written form of communication annoying. I too cannot keep up with the conversation during an online game if I'm forced to use a mic. If I use a mic, I keep terse comments to the gameplay rather than try to sustain a chatty, entirely distracting conversation.

It seems to me that a lot of nerds are slightly into the spectrum of Autism, so are more understanding and accepting of it in general. The more Autism is in the news and awareness is raised about it, the more I start to realize that a lot of my engineering coworkers, and myself, have a lot of these traits, to a greater or lesser extent. I have a coworker who sits 3 feet from me who almost always emails me rather than talks to me, and I usually just type a reply rather than interrupt him. It's just the way we roll, I guess.
