I play Minecraft online with some friends. We have microphones so we can chat, but I often find it overwhelming and mute the speakers. If it goes on long enough, every word feels like someone's slapping me across the face, which obviously is not the intent of the usually chatty and friendly goings-on; so it's better for me to just mute it and fall silent if I haven't got the brain to talk. In the past, I had been a little worried that people would be offended that I find talking to be rather tiring and will mute the speakers and/or type instead of talking, and sometimes ignored socializing altogether because I really didn't have enough concentration left for it. I hoped they had not taken it personally.
So the other day, when a new guy joined the server, I was introduced as, "That's Lisa; she talks once in a while." At the time I was involved in a typed conversation about the genetics of virtual bees!
I replied, "Yeah, I often get lazy and type instead of talking." Nobody seemed to think that was weird, even though more than one of said friends doesn't like typing and generally prefers to talk. It's quite common to think that choosing to write rather than talk is the opposite of lazy, especially when you have a microphone handy. I found it rather amusing and reassuring that they just replied, "Fair enough," and seemed to be pretty cool with often having to read what I said instead of listen to it. Is it my imagination, or did a bunch of (albeit nerdy) (mostly) NTs just take it for granted that a fellow human might prefer written speech to spoken, without being rude?
I'm not sure, but I I think my friends are actually getting used to me!
