Yikes, I get those dreams too, except I'm usually in a mental institution trying to avoid being drugged and put in solitary care because of my 'ravings'. Sometimes I grow panicked when a fictional paramilitary character busts me out because then I think I really am crazy and deserve to stay where I'm at. Quite convoluted, indeed.
At any rate I'm a lucid dreamer too, but my brain/subconscious is far too smart. I have learned that it doesn't want me to realize I'm dreaming/having a nightmare.
So around pre-teen years my dreams went from "I definitely know I'm dreaming" lucid to "Oh I must be awake and OMG REALISTIC DEATH AND DESTRUCTION" nightmares. It got to the point where I thought I was going insane because I could no longer differentiate between being asleep and being awake. Talk about scary

I understand you. When I was a teen, I didn't have nightmares at all, but now my dreams can be really scary. Being an adult is not so pleasant as I thought of it earlier.

I think I went through similar things in my 20's and early 30's, because for almost everybody, we're still "growing up" in that era, and still rely on help/input from others, to a greater or lesser extent. Like even just being a "junior" person in a job, you're always treated like a "young pup" whom other people mentor. But you're right, that help always does come with strings attached. And the frustration that you're not totally independent, or "senior", yet
