I think I went through similar things in my 20's and early 30's, because for almost everybody, we're still "growing up" in that era, and still rely on help/input from others, to a greater or lesser extent. Like even just being a "junior" person in a job, you're always treated like a "young pup" whom other people mentor. But you're right, that help always does come with strings attached. And the frustration that you're not totally independent, or "senior", yet.
I am really keen on some research that got a lot of publicity in the last year, that shows that people from age 50 onward get happier and happier. The researcher said she's not certain why, but her impression from the people they studied was just that by the time you hit that age, you've "been there, done that" with almost everything, so things don't shake you anymore. You know you're going to be ok, that you can do what you need to do, and get through tough times, because you've done it over and over by that age. You're usually settled financially, and life just gets easier. I am 40 now, and can feel myself heading there- I wouldn't trade it for my 20's any day! I'm looking forward to it getting easier and easier...
