Debian is outdated and hard to use, gentoo is NOT a good starter distro or second distro, and has some real issues at the moment, so SuSE 9.2, or the latest Mandrake.

Mandrake I don't have anyone handy using that distro.
my friends use SuSE or Debian.

Your comment on Debian was added to the list we comply for our sysad: Why no-one besides him thinks Debian the best.

Unfortunatly, he's making up a counter-list :) ... and we're quite par.

Debian stable is suitable for nuclear plants and other extremely high uptime requirement systems where human lives are on the line. Otherwise it's a joke :-).

I know, thanks. I have that c't at home already (but didn't think about it when writing the entry)
I thought that was only the personal edition.
But apart from that I don't like SuSE 9.3, didn't hear much good about it.

something else. Mainly I'll suggest Ubuntu. I'd suggest SuSE but if you don't like it, it's time to test something new. Ubuntu is based on Debian but it has much more usable configuration and management tools and more up to date software. It's fairly new distro too.

In my understanding you can order the cd's (or dvd I'm not sure) from the web site for free or for a very low amount of money.

sag mal, wie kommst du eigentlich nach Karlsruhe?
andreas fährt nämlich schon am Montag, und ich würde Freitag oder Samstag nachkommen. Zug gemeinsam ist unterhaltsamer, und wenn du Auto fährst: Ich bin ein perfekter Beifahrer :-))

Meine derzeitige Planung ist, dass ich am Freitag nachmittag fahre.
warscheinlich mit dem Auto.
