Debian is outdated and hard to use, gentoo is NOT a good starter distro or second distro, and has some real issues at the moment, so SuSE 9.2, or the latest Mandrake.

Mandrake I don't have anyone handy using that distro.
my friends use SuSE or Debian.

Thanks for your opinion.

Your comment on Debian was added to the list we comply for our sysad: Why no-one besides him thinks Debian the best.

Unfortunatly, he's making up a counter-list :) ... and we're quite par.

Debian stable is suitable for nuclear plants and other extremely high uptime requirement systems where human lives are on the line. Otherwise it's a joke :-).

I've just spent a few days downloading the latest Debian because someone else said this about it:

Debian has officially released the 3.1 version of the Debian GNU/Linux distro. This is great news! Debian has been working on this release for a couple of years now and during that time have developed a much improved installer for Debian GNU/Linux. If you are looking to try out GNU/Linux and have not done so yet this new installer makes it easier for you to install. My reason for choosing Debian GNU/Linux is because of the package management it is first class and the largest available of any GNU/Linux distro. Both apt and dpkg make package installation, removal, and updating much easier since dependencies are automatically dled/handled along with the requested package. For more info checkout the Debian website.

He even had links.

The jiglo method of downloading is neat, but still sucks for me.

Order Ubuntu cds from here. It might be faster to order them by mail than to download.

I skimmed all over, but I never saw how they can afford to ship free CDs everywhere in the world. Ideas?

We just picked out our new apartment today, so I don't even know the mailing address I'd be at. Heh.

Besides, I like the idea of downloading the distro in DVD format. It's my tiny little acknowledgement of the geek genome.

They probably get donations? Anyways it's their problem, no? :) They do ship to Finland so I don't think that Japan will be any different.

If you really want the DVD image you have to download it with BitTorrent.

I figured, but still. naruki_oni June 17 2005, 14:29:48 UTC
Seems like they'd need a lot more donations than normal, but what do I know?

I already have the first (and largest) DVD of the latest Debian burned and ready to go. The second one is still downloading, but it should be finished in a day or so.

Bittorrent would be nice, but that's not an option for the DVD image. At least, not for Debian (that I could find on their site).

I have to get ready for my first day of work on Monday. ;-)

Not so much donations as the fact that the project was founded and sponsored by some rich entrepreneur... he got rich, sold his company, and poured a load of money into making a Linux distro, or something.
