Shameless Joker Fangirl here is surprised to find out that Batman was apparently in the film, as well.
And yes, the Disappearing Pencil Trick and the Joker Inna Dress futzing with his detonator are my favorite bits because they hearken back to my favorite Joker--the hilarious madman. (AKA Mark Hamill. No question--my all-time fave. That insane laugh still creeps me out.)
After the movie I wrote some pompous post on his role in our society. Clearly I've been an anthropology major for far too long.
Well, I'm no expert on anthropologicality or nothin'. I'm just a simple guy who likes big shiny movies. That being said, the Mark Hamill Joker is always the one I hear when I'm reading the comics. His voice truly resonated with the essence of the Joker. But Jack Nicholson was much more a force of pure madness and insanity made real, which is why I think he's still the best Joker.

There was something about the Glasgow smile and the way he was always prodding at it with his tongue that added a certain somethin' to it. (Favorite theory as to how he got it: did it to himself because HE CRAZY, and instead of screaming like most people, he laughed.) Also, he had great socks.
But Luke Skyjoker is mad STYLIN'. I just was not down with the clown face as makeup or the slob look. Gimme the fedora, the spats, the carefully made-up hair, and the way he's enjoying the HELL out of his crazy schemes with the fish or the cake bombs or the Christmas-themed mayhem. And you actually can't take the guy seriously--and then suddenly the body count's hit triple digits. And, of course, the voice and the laugh. Hooboy.
"You're saying that your client, one of the richest and most powerful men in the world, is secretly a vigilante who routinely beats criminals to a pulp with his bare hands, and your plan is to blackmail him? Good luck with that."
This film was MOSTLY awesome, but please can we skip the long boring monologues where the characters have to explain to us why Batman is being persecuted, why his role is different/special etc?
Skip that, & there will be more time for eardrum-splitting explosions.
They need that exposition to pander to the lowest common denominator. Some folks just dont understand why Batman is so special, even though the movie pretty much beat you over the head with it for 2.5 hours.
Now now... you can't disrespect Jack like that. It's two different environments, two different settings, two different styles. For the 1989 movie, Heath Ledger's Joker was not the right person, but Jack's was. And vice versa. Jack was much more "comic book", which is appropriate since this is, in fact, a comic book brought to life. Heath was much more gritty and real, which is appropriate for this film's time and age.
And OH JEBUS I just realized that these movies are 20 years apart and I was in college when I saw the first one and OH FUCK I'M OLD.

Word! The whole audience went into loud LOL's and wild applause when that happened.
"Note: Heath Ledger, as the Joker, dressed as a nurse, might be the most unintentially hilarious scene caught on film this year."
Also unintentionally hot. Fuck you, Ledger!

Exactly. Although my favorite version of Joker is the cartoon version, TDK!Joker turned him into a 3D nightmare. Brilliant!
