Kumorinochi Kaisei - the lyrics, the melody & the music on the whole is a really happy/cheerful song. What was Ohno-san's impression of the song when you first heard it?
My first impression was that it's a song that really suits the drama. It's not an overly cheery song, you can sing it even if you feel tired, I think this aspect is similar to the drama. And it's very catchy/can be remembered easily. Like people will wonder what is 'Dan Dan Dang!'? [laughs]
Then how did you feel when you actually sung it?
Cuz it's this type of song, I just went along with the beat. During the recording, I was smiling when I was singing this song.
Smiling?
Because the director asked me to smile while I was singing. But well, I started to feel tired after a while, so in the later half of the recording, I just sang normally [laughs].
Though you're using your character's name, how do you feel about releasing a solo single?
I thought "Is this really okay?" [laughs] It's kinda unbelievable & though I don't really know why, but I'm not really that conscious of it either. I just did what I was asked to do. The recording for Arashi's songs are always done separately too, so I'm not don't really feel that I'm doing a solo. I did it like how I normally do it.
In Arashi's jobs, you don't really seem give your own opinions. Do you take the same stance for your solo?
Yeah. I listen to what the director & staff say, do whatever that I can do in a way that suits me. It has always been like that.
The music video was very good.
That, I had quite a hard time. Because I was filming the drama all the time, I memorise the dance steps by watching the video during the filming breaks. But I couldn't get them into my head. And when I arrived at the shooting location, the set was very elaborate & I thought "Oh no~ I better do this properly!" [laughs].
[laughs] The scenes with just the upper-half of your body in the first-half of the music video was especially good. Were the movements fixed/decided for you?
No, the half-body parts were the only parts where the moves weren't fixed. The director said "I'll just leave it to you. Do it yourself."
As expected! You moved along with the music very naturally. The movements weren't very big/flashy but they were very original, something by Ohno-kun.
That part, that was the very first scene we shot & it was very early in the morning...... I was just moving like "pa~ pa~ pa~" based on my feelings [laughs].
You work really well with music. And in concerts too, the rhythm seems to come from deep within you. You seem like a person that likes music & dance a lot.
I do listen to music everyday but it's not like it's anything special. I just let it play like background music. Rather than 'like', I think it has become more like a habit. A habit which I can't change.
What do you listen to usually?
Mostly western music. Ah, but I often listen to Maou's soundtrack too. I think the person who thought of that is really a genius.

Art, dance & music.
He pursue after the things he likes single-mindedly.
Up till now, we know that Ohno-kun likes singing, dancing & art. And they are all connected to work.
But rather than saying it's work, what I like is what I like. Sometimes, when I hum some unknown tunes or when I sing randomly in the karaoke. I like that. Dance too, sometimes when a song is playing & I get on the beat naturally, that's fun. In the past, I wanted to improve my dance in terms of skills/techniques. It's not about how people think about it, it's about whether I myself can accept it. But now, that's gone & I'm just doing it cuz I like it.
In terms of performing arts, you seem like you're good at everything. Are you a nimble/dexterous person? For example, like "windmill" [a high level technique which involves using your body as an axis & the swinging of both legs] in break dancing. If a person can do it after practising for 100 times, you seem like a person that can do it within 10 times.
Windmill eh...... I wanted to learn it when I was in a Junior. I tried it once & I failed. I hit my crotch, it was very painful & I never tried it again since then [laughs].
That's a different story [laughs].
But I think dancing does take up a lot of time. You watch the video of someone who is good in dancing (as in a pro), then you practise the steps, but you still can't really get it sometimes [laughs]. But I think the longer you take, the better. You practise it 100 times & you're finally able to do it well, it feels like your hard work paid off & it's like you won/overcome something [laughs]. Art is like that too. When I was making figures, I failed many many times. Though there were times that I was starting to get irritated/wanted to give up, but cuz I failed, so I wanted to do it again. So in the end, I thought I should make 100 & I managed to do it [laughs].
Most people wouldn't think of making 100 [laughs].
Cuz it's something that I like, no matter how many times I fail, I'll still want to do it.
Since last year, you have been very busy with solo activities. Has anything changed for you?
Though there are times that I don't really like it (being busy) since I don't have time to do the things that I like...... But now, I've come to think that it's fine.
You've come to think about it that way?
Yeah. If I do it, it does bears fruit. Now I just try not to think about things too much. Sort of not go against the flow......
That's Ohno-kun's philosophy. But how you deal with stress when you can't do the things you like?
Through delusions [laughs]. Since I can't do what I like now, then I'll think about what to do after my work, like where should I go for fishing or maybe I should try making that (art) next. I imagine during filming breaks.
[laughs] Rather than saying you're firm, you're really 'my pace'/not influenced by others.
Yep, not influenced. It's tiring if I am.
Like even in variety shows, when you don't want to talk, you really don't talk [laughs], that takes a lot of courage!
Well, I'll just talk when I want to talk. Though I may not be really good at it [laughs]. And sometimes, when people say "Let's go eat together" & I don't feel like going, I'm the type that will just say it out.
Though you said that you didn't want to enter the entertainment industry, it's the 10th anniversary now, how is it like?
That hasn't change either. Till now, I still don't understand why people around me get excited & all. I think it's really unbelievable. And sometimes I think why am I here? [laughs]
Even when you've released a solo single (you still think this way)?
Maybe, I'm bad at this, being in the entertainment industry. Since I'm the type that wants to be left alone. For instance, during filming of dramas, when they announce "Ohno-san is coming in~!" very loudly, I'll feel embarrassed/troubled [laughs].

Try telling that to someone older. It's troubling/embarrassing. Don't say anything! I'll just enter quietly [laughs]. I still can't get used to these kind of things till now. I don't like getting attention & when I get flattered by people, I'm not good at handling that too.
What do you do about it then?
I'll avoid it/pass it to other people. Like when I'm with Arashi, I'll hide behind & say "MatsuJun, go~! Next, Sho-kun, go~!" [laughs].
Covering up your true feelings [laughs] But you like the job itself right?
Yes. I like concerts, it's like a festival to me, it's fun. And I like the feeling after a stage play ends. Though it's scary during the process, but being able to overcome that, the feeling of achievement is great.
How about when you're making art pieces?
I like it. Basically, I draw or make figures for my own satisfaction. To be able to do it freely is what that is important to me. It's not about other people's assessment or anything. But of course, when people say they like my work, I feel happy.

The reason he is able to stay in Arashi?
What you want in life is very simple. Yet, Ohno-kun is in such an entertainment industry & is able to continue to be in Arashi. Why?

Yes, that's true. If it's just for myself, I wouldn't do it.
So maybe it's for the people around you then? The members, fans, staff & etc. It feels like it's because these people have expectations of you, that's why you work so hard.
......That may be true. Though I've never been conscious about it, but that may be the case. It doesn't matter where I go or what I become [laughs]. Not at all! I'm totally like a kid sometimes. I always get reprimanded by the people higher-up "You're not a kid anymore" [laughs].

Yeah. But I don't want to change.
I wonder what will happen 10 years later.
I don't know~ When people ask me what's my dream, I don't really have any specific goals like I want to become such an actor or I want to do such a job. But it'll be good if I can find something that I like doing. Though I'm sure I'll still continue fishing [laughs].

Even though I don't catch anything, I can still be at it for like 5-6 hours. I have to bring someone who'll stop me [laughs].
Now that you mention it, last year, you became really tanned because of fishing. Arashi members' skin colour are all different & it was tough doing the photoshoot [laughs].
But I did put sunblock lotion.
That's not the problem here [laughs]. In this aspect, you're really not an adult.
Cuz I'll think it doesn't matter & it's okay to go. Anyway, if that's the case, getting the other 4 to become tan will solve the problem right [laughs].

1. How do you get into your character's role?
For now, I don't do anything to get into my role. Cuz it's close to the real me, I don't really do anything & just act as myself. It's easy. But for Maou, it was totally different. I did do things to get into my character's role, like imagining how my character's life is like. But thinking about taking revenge for 11 years is tough [laughs].
2. If you were to use the fishes you catch to create art, how would you go about doing it?
I've thought about it. once. When I caught a black porgy the other time, I grilled & ate it, but the teeth was really amazing, so I washed it & kept it. Ah, I got it! From now on, I'll keep the teeth of all the fishes I catch & make something out of it. But I don't know where the black porgy's teeth went to, so forget it [laughs].
3. Are there times when you can't help but laugh when you're filming?
When the staff makes me laugh.
4. What made you happy recently? Even it's something very small, please tell us.
Drama filming was shortened by 4 hours yesterday [laughs]. I'm happy when it's shortened. And it's the first time it was shortened by 4 hours.
5. Though Ohno-kun is stoic, do you have times when you think you can't forgive/go easy on yourself?
Yes, when I don't do what I have set out to do, I'll feel that I've lost to myself.
6. Did you encounter any trouble when you go fishing?
Like when I thought this amount of hooks or fishing devices is enough but in the end, it turns out that it's not enough.
7. If only one of your wishes can be granted, what would you wish for?
I want to become a fish [laughs]. I wonder what it is thinking about. A fish is really simple-minded [laughs]. Cuz even if it escapes, it'll still come back for the bait again. I really want to know what it is thinking about.

8. Ohno-kun always have this gentle/soothing aura. When you're alone & when you're with Arashi, is there a difference?
I wouldn't know that myself.

10. If you were to become the older brother of one of the Arashi members, who would it be?
Sho-kun...... is okay, but I guess it's MatsuJun! He is serious & steady/reliable. If the younger brother is steady/reliable, somehow it'll work out.
11. If you could be another member for a day, who would you want to change places with?
Sho-kun. Then I'll appear in News Zero & be a fail!Sho-kun who can't get anything right [grins]. Though I'm Sho-kun on the outside, but it's me on the inside, so I'll be stumbling over my words, not talk at all during the free talk segment & be nervous throughout the whole thing.
Though it'll turn out like that that for talk parts, but from the atmosphere you give off or how you look, the two of you are really contrasting [laughs].
