Yes, it's all still alive. Well, mostly. Just after I dug up all the potatoes a while back, my plot was beset by a mildew infestation - one of the neighbouring plots had it, left it untreated, and then it spread to the entire garden. Went to the garden to water and found the zucchini strangling the potato plants. Had to hack back the marauders and found they'd murdered three plants, so I went digging about to see if I could rescue anything. Found all these!

A few weeks ago, I started a compost bin on my balcony. I did it with a big Rubbermaid bin with a tray, some newspaper, and a couple of handfuls of worms and compost dirt harvested from Mum's mega-composter. We found surprisingly few worms, so I was a little worried it wouldn't work - there would be too much food for too few worms ( Read more... )

I'd forgotten, now I remember again: for the second time this spring, the weather has gotten nicer for a long stretch, just nice enough to tempt me into transplanting things into the garden plot, and then rebounded into Freaky Spring Windstorm like the one that killed my first batch of pumpkin and zucchini plants. I finally got some proper work done in the garden a couple of weeks ago, and the day before yesterday I planted about twelve cloves of garlic. I suspect I planted them upside-down. I'm not sure why I think that, but hopefully it will grow even if I'm right ( Read more... )

Tiny plant time!

This weekend, with the weather getting warmer, we are finally doing something with our community plot, so I had to ready those that were going in the ground, move those that weren't into bigger pots, and separate the things I had planted too close together into their own spaces, all without killing anything.
