Job Interview

Manpower (a temporary placement agency) called me yesterday with a long-term clerical position they needed to fill working for a company that does background checks. Well done! Oddly, turning down job interviews is a very hard thing to do, just because it's so flattering that they'd be considering hiring little old me. It's not a situation where you'd expect it to be hard, but it is, so I applaud your having done so.

I had an interview once long ago when I needed a dorky student job, and applied for one called “Data Entry” up at the University. Good, thought I, they'll lock me in a closet and cause me to type numbers all day, give me six bucks an hour for doing it, and I can go home every evening and forget all about it. So I spruced up, washed and even conditioned my over-a-foot-long ponytail, put on the tab-collar shirt, the cardigan and the slacks (not wanting to look TOO natty). I went to the interview and it became clear that the real job of a “Data Entry” person was to tell irate students that they'd waited too long to drop their classes and couldn't have their tuition money back.
