I've always wanted to do something similar. Just going away by myself. Not necessarily anywhere super far. Even San Diego would do. One day I'll do it. I like having some "me time" every once in a while. By the way, where did you rent the car? $20 a day seems super cheap. (Then again, I'm no expert on renting cars so I really wouldn't know.)
Anyway, glad you had a good (and safe) time spending time with yourself!
Payless car rental. It was cheap and I had a nice PT Cruiser with air, a CD player, and excellent lumbar support.
It was definitely very restorative. I would definitely recommend getting away for a bit if that will cure your wanderlust or whatever ails you. Plus I'm sure there are some nice hostels in SD.
Your SD idea brings to mind, my wanting to spend time in Santa Barbara. SD and SB are close enough to have mini-getaways at minimal cost.

YES. i can relate to that. i felt truly "myself" while traveling in india, but that feeling gradually slipped away once i was back, and i shut myself up again.
you can get it back, it never really left you--you only thought it did. i think it's somewhat due to societal roles and the roles we assume. it's hard to be in our world or surroundings and to not let it touch us or effect us in some way.
