Wiggly Wigglers sell potting compost, or there is http://www.ahsdirect.co.uk/product/425/221/. I rate New Horizon as almost the best of the peat-frees, though I once managed to buy a bag of stuff that was made from left-over Guinness hops, and that was even better. Tragically I've never managed to find it again though.
I've found delivery tends to be expensive on compost, but I can see it would be worth it if you have to carry it home on your back!
Thinking on, what about coir blocks? I've tried them before now and have been quite impressed: so much lighter and easier to move about, and they should be cheaper on the delivery, as they are dried and you rehydrate them to use them. You would need to supplement with a plant food, and perhaps some bonemeal for shrubs, I think: there isn't much nutrition in them but they are great for aeration and nice fluffy light compost.
Have you considered getting a shopping trolley? Poundstretcher had them for about £12 last year and they're great for lugging stuff in if you don't have a car.
That's a good idea, Bacchus usually uses his big rucksack when we have big heavy stuff, but a shopping trolley would probably be better. I'm not sure I've seen any for sale in G'ham - it's so crap we don't even have a Poundstretcher! One of the market stalls might have one though, so I'll keep an eye out.
*vows to stop reading FList until some gardening done* What?! You mean you'd be gardening at work? Silly boy. Anyway it's turned to cold to garden so leave it until the weekend.
This is the first gardening I've done this year, I'm really a very bad gardener (strictly weekends and fair weather only!), I just have high hopes of what I might be able to achieve. The likelihood is that all my crops will be eaten by snails and the Buddleia will keep on growing until it can reach in through the bedroom window to strangle me for trying to slay it :-)
