Why do writers like princesses so much?  And hate witches?

[It seems someone has acquired a book of fairytales.]

princess, fairytale, question, book

Perhaps because princesses are useful and witches are little more than an annoyance?

[...Well, that's one way to make her wince. That wasn't very nice. She's scowling at the PDA, now, but it's wobbly. That stung, more than she'd care to admit -- but perhaps that's just because she was already....]

[She wants to say something witty back, she wants to say something mean -- but nothing comes to mind, and a moment later, she feels bad for even thinking it. Even if it is Saix we're talking about. But she can't just leave that there, unresponded to. The only thing she can think is... surprisingly bitter, and so it is the only thing that she sends.]

Maybe so.

[This time, the Diviner's smooth cool voice traverses through the speakers.]

Do not be spineless, Namine. Roxas is hardly shield enough to protect you from this place.

[For a moment, there's a pause. He could just be baiting her -- he probably is. She knows it. .... But what's the harm in speaking up, for once?]

[...and she'll never admit it, but that book really set her on edge.]

[Finally, her own voice comes through, tight and annoyed (for her) and more than a little bit quavery, even though she's trying to be stern.]

...Leave him out of this.

Perhaps because most readers love happy endings.

Happy endings? What does that have to do with princesses?

[...As if she doesn't already know the deal. It's haunted her more than she'd care to admit. But she still wants to know -- why is it always a princess?]

Because it's every little girl's dream, to one day be a princess and live happily ever after, I suppose.

Pretty dreams, those.

But, why a princess? Why do they always choose a princess? Couldn't someone normal be just as good a person?

[...And it's a shame, because, even though she knew it was stupid, even though she knew it was futile, she knew those dreams, too.]

...Maybe it's because they're supposed to be pretty.

[...She spends a moment staring at this text. After her conversation with Saix.... Well, he definitely seemed to think that this was the real Roxas, and frankly, she was inclined to agree -- she'd seen nothing to the contrary, except that he hadn't recognized her. But, well... she was used to being forgotten. However, she won't be making any reference to this revelation.]

...Maybe.

But why are they always pretty? Aren't there any ugly ones?

[He thought about that for a while, considering.] Maybe there are. Maybe they just don't make it into books.

...That's... not very nice. I mean, ugly people can be good people too, princess or witch or normal person or... whatever they are.

Your reading a fairy tale then?

Yes. I found a book full of them and... I was curious.

Oh? Which one are you reading? I know I used to read them all the time when I was little.

Not one specifically. I just finished a few and couldn't help noticing a pattern.

It is the cruel fact of a generation of hopeless romantics.

The witch is meant to be evil. The princess is meant to be good and happy; wanting for love. And a prince is meant to ride in and rescue her.

You will never read of a princess saving herself, you will never read of a witch being 'good' -unless you locate the books of Oz.

Perhaps those would suit you better.

['Meant'. Hah.... That word, and those concepts -- they'd made an impression on her from the first time she'd heard them. She knows, she knew -- but now she's hearing it again, listening to it be confirmed.]

[But... another story? Something different? It definitely piques her interest. She eyes the last line of the text for a moment, wondering if there's something knowing behind it or if she's just being paranoid, and then responds,]

Oz? Is that the title, or just a description?

The Tales of Oz, I believe it the title. There are many, tales of the Wizards, tales of the witches, of the people around the Emerald City.

If you are looking for a good witch, you will find it there. Glinda, White Witch.

Why the interest?

[She'll definitely keep that one in mind for her next trip to the stores.]

I see. Thank you.

Well, I... was just curious. It just seems like maybe the story could be interesting with a different touch to it.

[...Only half the reason, if that. But it's still a part.]
