Why do writers like princesses so much?  And hate witches?

[It seems someone has acquired a book of fairytales.]

princess, fairytale, question, book

Perhaps because princesses are useful and witches are little more than an annoyance?

[...Well, that's one way to make her wince. That wasn't very nice. She's scowling at the PDA, now, but it's wobbly. That stung, more than she'd care to admit -- but perhaps that's just because she was already....]

[She wants to say something witty back, she wants to say something mean -- but nothing comes to mind, and a moment later, she feels bad for even thinking it. Even if it is Saix we're talking about. But she can't just leave that there, unresponded to. The only thing she can think is... surprisingly bitter, and so it is the only thing that she sends.]

Maybe so.

[This time, the Diviner's smooth cool voice traverses through the speakers.]

Do not be spineless, Namine. Roxas is hardly shield enough to protect you from this place.

[For a moment, there's a pause. He could just be baiting her -- he probably is. She knows it. .... But what's the harm in speaking up, for once?]

[...and she'll never admit it, but that book really set her on edge.]

[Finally, her own voice comes through, tight and annoyed (for her) and more than a little bit quavery, even though she's trying to be stern.]

...Leave him out of this.

[A growl threads through the Second's reply.]

Do not proceed to give me orders, Princess.

[Have a very silent, very glaring Naminé. She's cowed, and she knows it. She almost snaps back - almost - and that 'Princess' comment--]

[But she knows better than that. So instead, she sighs, trying to let out all that tension out, sans words. There's a moment's hesitation, then a grudging but, suprisingly, sincere,]

Please.

[Much better. It's still so easy.]

Worry not for your little Nobody, Namine. He looms rather small in my designs for this wretched place.

I trust I will have no interference from you on that score. Do recall, your existence here is little more than an inconvenience, one easily remedied.

[Her--? She wants to say something to that, anything - her cheeks are flaring red, that sounds so-- - but she's long since learned that the less she says, the better, so she'll just be biting her tongue, as far as that is concerned. Literally. And though it's like acid on her tongue, to say it to him - even if it's true - she says,]

...Thank you.

I... have no intention of getting in your way.

[Unless, of course, he involves her... or certain other people. It goes without saying that she's going to go without saying that.]

Good girl. Keep that in mind, when next you speak with the boy-wonder.

....

As you say.

But I... don't have much influence in the matter.
